How do you find moving help and agree a clear scope?
WorkDeal · updated 03/11/2026
In short
A moving helper can make a comparable offer when you distinguish carrying assistance from a move with transport and describe conditions at both locations. Before choosing, agree the item list, number of helpers, equipment and tasks included in the price.
Do you need carrying help or transport too?
Moving help can mean simply carrying items into a vehicle you have arranged, or the whole journey including loading and unloading. State which option you need straight away. If you arrange transport, explain who will drive and when the vehicle will arrive. If you expect the applicant to provide transport, ask them to confirm that the vehicle suits the items.
A moving helper needs a schedule: when work starts, whether keys are available at both locations and whether loading has a time limit. Do not assume one person will arrive with a team. Ask how many helpers the offer includes, who organises them and whether their working time is included.
Describe items and access at both locations
List boxes, furniture and appliances, with quantities and dimensions for larger items. Photos help show shape, condition and narrow passageways. Give the weight if known, or say honestly if you do not know it. Do not present an uncertain estimate as a fact or let photos replace an explanation of important restrictions.
For both locations, describe the floor, stairs, lift availability and dimensions, and the route from the door to the vehicle. Explain parking arrangements, any stopping restrictions and longer carrying distances. The public listing only needs the town or municipality and an access description, not the exact address. Read the guide to a clear listing too.
Allocate preparation and equipment
Agree who packs boxes, protects fragile items and empties cupboards. Specify whether furniture needs dismantling and reassembling at the destination. The guide to furniture assembly help explains this work in more detail. Do not assume packing or assembly is included in the carrying price.
Ask who brings a trolley, protective blankets, securing equipment and agreed tools. Use equipment according to the manufacturer’s instructions. For a very heavy item such as a piano or safe, seek competent help with relevant experience and equipment. If safe access or lifting is uncertain, the situation needs a separate assessment before work starts.
Sample listing and a comparable offer
Example: I am looking for moving help in Tartu to move the contents of a two-room flat to another part of town on Saturday morning. The list includes 18 packed boxes, a dismantled bed frame and a sofa measuring 210 × 90 × 85 cm. The starting flat is two levels above ground with no lift; the destination is on the ground floor. Brief stopping is possible near both buildings, with a carrying distance of about 25 metres. Photos are attached. I need two helpers and a suitable vehicle; I will do the packing. Please describe the work, equipment and time included in your price, and any possible extra costs.
Ask the offer to distinguish carrying, transport, travel time, possible waiting and other agreed tasks. For hourly work, clarify when charging starts and ends, and whether the rate is per person or for the team. Agree how extra costs will be approved if the number of items or access conditions change.
