How do you find a reliable person for a one-off job?

WorkDeal · updated 03/11/2026

In short

Choose a reliable helper for the specific job: describe the task, compare relevant experience and clarify agreements in chat. Reviews help with the decision but do not guarantee results; clear answers to your questions also show whether someone is suitable.

Start with a clear task

When looking for help, describe the expected result, the town or municipality, a suitable time and the approximate duration. Explain which equipment is available and what the person needs to bring. Add photos if they help explain the scope, but avoid sharing personal details or the exact address.

A person taking on a one-off job also needs boundaries: what is included and what is not? For cleaning, for example, distinguish routine cleaning from window washing. Read the guide to a clear job listing and, where relevant, advice on finding cleaning help. A clear description makes offers for the same work easier to compare.

Compare skills and read reviews closely

First consider whether the experience offered matches your task. Carrying moving boxes does not automatically demonstrate furniture dismantling skills. Ask about similar work, equipment used and any limitations. For very heavy or hazardous work, seek competent help rather than simply a willingness to try.

Look beyond stars to the comments, their relevance to your task and the number of ratings. One brief compliment tells you less than several detailed accounts of similar tasks. Limited feedback does not itself mean someone is unsuitable: follow-up questions become especially important. Do not treat a profile or rating as a guarantee of results.

Ask about experience and availability

Example: Hello! What similar storage-room organising jobs have you done? This task involves sorting boxes and putting them on shelves, not taking them away. Does the time window in the listing suit you, and how long would you allow? What equipment would you bring? Please clarify what your price includes and what circumstances might change the scope.

Compare how specific the answers are, not just the price. If an answer is vague, ask one follow-up question at a time. Confirm the start time and whether the person can stay for the agreed period. If the description changes, send the same clarification to every applicant whose offer you are still considering.

Choose only after clarifying the details

The WorkDeal sequence is: Complete the listing → Review the conditions → Confirm publication → Receive offers → Choose a suitable person → The job gets done. Before confirming, check the publication terms and fee shown in the form. If payment is required, the listing is published once the payment is confirmed; if a fee waiver applies, follow the confirmation step shown in the form. Before choosing, you see the applicant’s first name or company name, profile picture and rating.

Public listings show only the town or municipality. Before selection, chat filters out email addresses, phone numbers and addresses; after selection, the filter switches off and contacts and the exact address become visible to the chosen person. Do not try to bypass the filter. Keep agreements about scope and price in the chat after selection too.

You pay the person directly, not through WorkDeal; agree payment details in chat. Also specify who supplies materials, protects the work area and organises waste removal. Agree that extra work and its price must be approved before it is carried out, rather than at the end.
